Pageant Dresses: Most Popular Color

It seems that when you look at a brochure with pictures of the winners of both local and national glitz pageants, that white seems to be the predominant color of the pageant dresses.  Wearing a white dress is supposed to bring the judges focus to the girl and not the dress.  Perhaps this is why the white dresses seem to win so much.

Sadly, not all girls look great in white.  My daughter, for instance, is fair skinned with light blue-gray eyes and strawberry blonde hair.  A white dress would completely wash her out, and she’s too young for spray tanning.

A white dress complements girls who naturally have an olive skin tone or even naturally fair skinned girls who have been tanning or spray tanned.  A white dress against pasty, white skin is not flattering.  A white dress can complement girls with blonde hair or brunette hair, but doesn’t really complement a redhead unless she is unbelievably tan with really rich red-auburn hair.  Many times, redheads are fair skinned with plenty of freckles.  A white dress definitely shouldn’t be the pick for these girls.

The glorified “white” dress has an uncanny reputation for winning the biggest titles.  A white dress is unlikely to receive a negative comment from a judge unless it washes the wearer of the dress out.  Judges ultimately want to judge the girl and not the dress she is wearing.  White dresses, as well as other neutral colors, are sometimes the right way to go among the Teen Miss and Miss divisions.  The younger girls have more options and are just as likely to win in a brightly colored dress as they are in a solid white dress.  So, in a nutshell, you’re daughter isn’t doomed if she can’t wear a white dress.
